Facilitating Open Spaces

In retrospect, the week was a very rich ground for learning about the relationship between openness and structure in designing learning. My ambition was to create a space in which any of the many talented and experienced individuals invited along could contribute.  After the NaturamaKV project in Nagyvázsony nearly two years ago, we noted the importance of 'fixed points', and for this event we tried to build in the following:

a) Fixed meal times
b) Commonly agreed ground rules
c) Agreed roles - people in charge of things happening, rather than merely having to do them
d) A common structure to the workshops: doing, discussion, reflection
e) A common analytical framework that we applied to each technique
f) Time at the beginning of the day to catch up and look ahead at the schedule
g) A public 'sticky-note' schedule that got updated as we went along
h) A reflection at the end of each day

The group responded really well, but one of the reflections at the end of the week was that there were definitely people who might have come that hadn't.  I'd not want to lose the excitement that comes out of being surprised at just how good this way of doing things feels - it didn't belong to anyone and gave space to everyone to contribute and to benefit.  But it would be good to work up a little more structure to use before such an event to communicate what the possibilities will be
